When your passion is your life's work.

Music has always been a major part of Keith's life, from making mix tapes in grade one, to starting guitar lessons at nine years old. Obviously, the next step was to become a rock star and tour the world, but life had other plans. Years of teaching guitar, playing in bands, and earning a B.A. and M.A. in musicology, led to a diverse and rewarding career in music.

Keith has taught private and group guitar, bass, and ukulele lessons since 2004. His M.A. thesis, Jamaican Canadian Music in Toronto in the 1970s and 1980: A Preliminary History, was the first major study of Jamaican music in Canada. A teaching professor at the University of Ottawa since 2017, he has taught a dozen music history courses for thousands of students. His work spans the ages, performing weekly at retirement homes since 2014; preschools since 2021; and mentoring teen musicians through Ottawa Bluesfest's Be in the Band program since 2013. As a teacher, musician and a music historian, Keith relishes the opportunity to pass on knowledge, and more importantly, the love of music.

Keith lives in Ottawa, Canada, with his wife and three kids. His house is full of instruments, CDs, records, and music books. When he isn't teaching or playing tunes, Keith likes to spend time with his family, cooking, camping, hiking, and biking. He is an avid traveller, always keen to take on an adventure and learn something new.

Portrait of Keith McCuaig

Keith is an amazing lecturer: knowledgeable, passionate and very able. It was a pleasure to be in his lecture series. I would definitely attend others taught by him.

- Participant, Lifelong Learning Program, Carleton University

Keith McCuaig's enthusiasm for and expert knowledge of his subject, coupled with his liberal use of sound bites from each song he discussed and the use of his own guitar to illustrate certain points - he is a gifted lecturer.

- Participant, one of Keith's online courses

As a 'mature' student and complete newcomer to guitar, Keith is patient, supportive and inspiring. His genuine love and deep knowledge of music is evident and I'd recommend him to anyone interested in taking up the guitar as I have.

- Brian, guitar student with Keith

I learned much about music genres that I grew up with and that shaped my values, while being thoroughly entertained by each and every lecture. I will prioritize future lecture offerings by Keith.
